Get involved Campaigns Travel Aware Campaign Every year, thousands of people travel abroad without realising that a simple mistake can change their lives forever. Some may escape with a fine or a night in a police station, but many face a prison sentence that must be served in the country where they were detained. Prisoners Abroad works with over 1,500 prisoners in 106 countries around the world, often far from home and held in conditions that fall below international standards. The isolation, language barriers, and harsh environments can have a severe impact on both physical and mental health - not only for those detained, but also for their families. Many are held in extremely poor conditions, sleeping in overcrowded, unhygienic cells with limited access to food, clean water, or basic support. In some cases, individuals are arrested for actions they did not realise were illegal, simply because they were unaware of the local laws and customs. These situations can often be avoided by taking time to research your destination and making sure you are travel aware before you travel. Staying informed and understanding local laws before travelling can make a crucial difference. For many years, we have worked in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to support the Travel Aware campaign, helping people stay informed and safe when travelling abroad. Brits love to explore the world, whether it’s chasing the sun, heading to the slopes for winter sports, or discovering new cultures and destinations. But wherever you go, a little preparation goes a long way in making sure your trip is both enjoyable and trouble-free. Before you travel, take time to research your destination. Understanding local laws, customs, and entry requirements is especially important as international travel continues to evolve. Our advice remains simple: plan ahead, stay informed, and trust your instincts. If a situation ever makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, leave immediately.
