Support. Action. Hope.

Our strategy and priorities to 2030

The title of this strategy – Support. Action. Hope. – captures the essence of what we do: support to ease the emotional distress and isolation felt by British citizens imprisoned overseas and their loved ones at home; action to safeguard and advocate for their rights, health and welfare; and hope to rebuild a connection to their country, their family and their own sense of self on their return.

Over the next five years, we plan to develop. That means we are looking at where we can do more, where we might work differently, how we maintain quality, develop sustainable capacity, explore collaborations and partnerships, and ultimately be confident that we are having the greatest positive impact.

Our key strategic threads

There are three key strategic threads that run throughout our priorities set out within this strategy:

Lived experience

We will actively involve people with lived experience throughout our work, centring the lived experience of people in our advocacy work, exploring the role of peer mentors in supporting people to build positive lives in the UK after prison abroad and more broadly developing a diverse workforce including increasing the proportion of people with lived experience as staff, volunteers and interns, and continuing our approach to lived experience on our trustee board.

Collaboration and partnerships

We are the only charity that has a dedicated focus on the health, welfare and human rights of British people in prison abroad. However, we cannot achieve the objectives in this strategy on our own. We have a well-developed range of partners that we work with, and we will deepen and broaden these to enable us to increase our overall impact, including the longer-term support provided by other organisations for those who have returned to the UK, and collaborating with advocacy organisations that focus on human rights and detention issues overseas.

Speaking up, with, and for people

We will draw on the insight and understanding we gain from providing our frontline support, advocating to ensure that the voices and experiences of the people we support have a platform, are listened to and understood by policymakers.

We are ambitious but pragmatic about the future. We are excited to deliver on this strategy, developing our frontline support alongside a focus on advocating for improvements in policy and practice. Our success relies on us continuing to build support amongst funders, donors, partners and supporters, and ultimately we will be guided by our redefined values as we strive towards delivering on our mission and towards achieving our vision.
