We’ve long supported the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s Travel Aware campaign and the same core travel-smart advice apply whatever the season. Taking a bit of time to plan ahead could help you avoid stress and even more serious trouble while you’re away.

With the Christmas break just around the corner, whether you’re off to the slopes, visiting family overseas or chasing some winter sun, now’s a good moment to make sure you’re properly prepared.

  • Check travel advice before you go. Before you book or set off, visit the FCDO’s travel advice for your destination. It’s the best place to find up-to-date information on entry requirements, safety, local laws and what to do in an emergency. Signing up for email alerts means you’ll get updates if anything changes while you’re away.

  • Double-check your documents. Check your passport expiration date, visa requirements and any entry rules related to health or winter-specific activities (like ski permits or equipment). Keeping a digital and physical copy of key documents can also be a lifesaver if you lose the originals.

  • Don’t skip travel insurance. Travel insurance isn’t just a formality, it provides vital cover for cancellations, medical costs, winter sports (if you’re skiing or snowboarding), and lost luggage. Make sure your policy covers all the activities you plan to do. For more travel insurance top tips, check: Travel insurance - Travel Aware.

  • Be aware of local laws. Laws vary greatly from country to country, and something that’s legal at home might not be where you’re going. Spending a few minutes reading up on local rules, such as prohibited items, alcohol laws or driving requirements, can help you stay out of trouble.

Save the contact details of your nearest British embassy or consulate and make sure someone at home knows your itinerary. If you find yourself in difficulty abroad, the FCDO provides consular support and advice. GOV.UK
