How we help Advocacy Reducing the burden on family members Reducing the burden on family members affected by overseas imprisonment - an often-invisible group who struggle with stigma, loneliness, media intrusion, and financial hardship as a result of a relative's overseas imprisonment. Family members are an often-invisible group who struggle with stigma, loneliness, media intrusion, and financial hardship. It is common for them to feel they have no one to talk to or that they are being judged by others – including other family and friends. We provide support to the families of British prisoners who primarily live in the UK as well as those who live overseas. We want to reach more family members and to raise awareness of their situation, give them a platform to voice their experiences, and help to arm them with tools to feel more in control of their situation. We believe that the HMPPS ‘help with visits’ scheme should cover families visiting relatives in prison overseas, and not just here in the UK.
