How we help Advocacy Improved treatment in prison that maintains dignity and prevents deaths Influencing policy that improves prison conditions, prevents deaths in custody, and shifts public perceptions. The rights of people in prison are often ignored and conditions vary enormously from country to country, as does government policy on the treatment, health and wellbeing of people in prison. Wider society does not generally look favourably on people in prison. Our mission is to protect, support and advocate for the health, welfare and human rights of British citizens in prison abroad, easing the isolation and deprivation they experience so they can face the future with hope. We are non-judgemental and believe that a prison sentence and the removal of freedom is the punishment for a crime and that no one’s life should be put at risk due to inhumane conditions. Prisoners Abroad also supports the British Government’s policy in opposition of the death penalty in all circumstances. We believe that its use undermines human dignity, that there is no conclusive evidence of its deterrent value, and that any miscarriage of justice leading to its imposition is irreversible and irreparable. We work closely with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to facilitate our overseas work and to resolve potential human rights abuses and cases of mistreatment when they are raised with us. Working with stakeholders such as the Council of Europe and considering the European Convention on Human Rights, we aim to raise the voices of people unable to have a say in the development of guidelines on prison conditions, and raise concern where people’s rights are not being respected.
